BYD’s Denza Z Coupe Spotted in China with Convertible Option, Poised to Rival MG Cyberster

BEIJING: Chinese automotive giant BYD’s Denza brand is making waves as its highly anticipated Z9 electric coupe was spotted in a new form: a soft-top convertible. The sighting signals an imminent launch in the Chinese domestic market, where the Denza Z is expected to compete directly with the MG Cyberster and other international four-seat sports cars.

The Denza Z was initially unveiled as an electric concept at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show, with design cues crafted by renowned Audi veteran Wolfgang Egger. The concept drew attention for its sharply sculpted rear fenders, aggressively sized front air intake, blacked-out roof, and dramatic rear spoiler. Recent developments include the pre-production variant undergoing road tests in early June across China, culminating in a leaked image of the soft-top cabriolet variant on July 29.

Design and Engineering Innovations

Staying true to its concept origins, the new Denza Z cabriolet features a sloped front profile, signature headlights, a prominent bonnet air vent, hidden door handles, and door-mounted side mirrors. The production model also houses a charging port on its right rear fender, a change from the concept’s dual-sided charging capability—a hallmark of BYD’s “two-gun charging” setup designed to enable simultaneous charging from two connectors for faster fill-ups.

The cabriolet’s introduction of a soft top may slightly impact aerodynamic efficiency and body rigidity, yet it expands the Denza Z’s appeal, setting the stage for a strong challenge to the likes of the MG Cyberster from SAIC. The regular coupe version was also recently seen in China, equipped with multi-spoke sporty wheels and design elements faithful to the show car.

Technology and Performance

While official technical specifications remain under wraps, BYD has confirmed that the Denza Z will utilize the advanced Disus-M suspension system. Derived from the Disus-Z chassis found in the Yangwang U7 luxury sedan, the system uses rapid-response sensors to read road conditions and adapt suspension settings within just 10 milliseconds.

Additional features expected for the Denza Z include a foldable steering wheel that enhances driver safety and space in the event of a collision. Industry observers speculate that the coupe could be powered by a formidable 580kW (778hp) electric motor, similar to those used in BYD’s Han L and Tang L models—a detail yet to be officially corroborated.

Competitive Landscape

The introduction of a convertible Denza Z signals BYD’s ambition to capture a slice of the performance EV segment dominated by international nameplates. By blending distinctive design, innovative engineering, and emerging electric platform technology, BYD is positioning the Denza Z as both a showcase for Chinese design prowess and a serious contender in the global electric sports car market.
